ICC holds informative workshop in Uganda’s Adjumani District

Representatives of communities in Uganda’s Adjumani and Moyo districts, West Nile sub-region, have recommended the International Criminal Court to conduct massive outreach in the area to help communities understand the work of the Court. They noted that the initiative could succeed by utilising the support of trained local leaders.

The recommendation was made at a one-day informative workshop attended by civil society organisations, local councillors, the judiciary and other civil servants representing the communities affected by the conflict in Northern Uganda. Forty one participants attended the workshop held on 20 March 2007 in Adjumani town, Adjumani district.

Participants noted that translating ICC materials into the local language, Madi, would strengthen victims’ participation in the proceedings of the Court.

Top Adjumani district leaders attended the workshop. The Chairperson of Adjumani District Council, Mr Angel Mark Dulu, pledged continued support to the ICC by the district council.

ICC officials responded to concerns expressed by participants and distributed informational materials about the Court and its work.
