Prof. Houwink ten Cate is currently a Professor of Holocaust and Genocide Studies at the University of Amsterdam and also serves as the secretary of the academic advisors to the Dutch co-plaintiffs in the current trial against the alleged Nazi death camp guard Iwan/John Demjanjuk in Munich. Prof. Houwink ten Cate studied contemporary and socio-economic history at the University of Utrecht (The Netherlands) and holds a PhD from the Institute for European History in Mainz (Germany) and the Institute for German History in London. The focus of his PhD was on the political and economic relations between The Netherlands and Germany from 1919 to 1939. From 1985 – 2002, Prof. Houwink ten Cate was a researcher at the Netherlands Institute for War Documentation in Amsterdam, his primary topic of interest being the Nazi persecution of Jews on Dutch occupied territories. Prof. Houwink ten Cate’s has published numerous articles including “The enlargement of the circle of perpetrators of the Holocaust”, “The Future of Holocaust Studies” and in 2007, addressed the European Parliament on Holocaust denial and the possibility of outlawing of genocide denial.
