Judge Wolfgang Schomburg

Judge Wolfgang Schomburg (Germany) has been Judge at the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia (ICTY) since March 2001; a Presiding Judge of Trial Chamber II since November 2001, and Judge of the Appeal Chamber of the ICTY and International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR) since October 2003.
Prior to his election as ICTY Judge, he worked as an expert in criminal matters for the Council of Europe and assisted in setting up Eurojust. From 1995 to 2000 he was Judge at the German Federal Court of Justice in the Chamber on Criminal Matters. From 1991 to 1995 he acted as a defence counsel and assisted victims and suspects in international criminal cases, inter alia, in Germany, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, and the United States of America.
In the 1970s and -80s, Judge Schomburg worked as Public Prosecutor, Federal Prosecutor and Senior Public Prosecutor in Germany. Moreover, he was a Judge in criminal matters at the Berlin Regional Court and held the position of Undersecretary of State at the Senate Justice Department.
Judge Schomburg is a member of the Board of Directors of the International Association of Penal Law and the Max Planck Institute for Foreign and International Law. He also lectures and has published extensively on issues of criminal law. He is editor and co-author of the German Standard Commentary on International Cooperation in Criminal Matters.
