Schools competition on the International Criminal Court concluded successfully in the Soroti district, north-eastern Uganda

On 16 June 2009, the field Outreach office in Kampala concluded the inter-school quiz competition on issues related to the work of the International Criminal Court (ICC).

A series of quiz competitions were organised in secondary schools within the Soroti district of the Teso sub-region in north-eastern Uganda, reaching a total 3,950 students.

Participating schools included the Soroti Secondary School, the Community Secondary, JERESSAR High School, Central High School and the Light Secondary School. The central objective of the programme is to encourage pupils to fully understand the mandate and activities of the Court through friendly competitions, thereby enhancing their knowledge of international criminal justice.

The competition also formed part of celebrations marking the Day of the African Child which is celebrated across the continent on 16 June every year.

Delivering the key note address at the finals, the District Education Officer for the Soroti district, Mr Etoyu Michael Oumo noted that he was extremely encouraged by the in-depth knowledge demonstrated by the students about the Court and their high level of accurate responses, “Every correct answer you have provided here today serves as information about the Court to the audience and I urge you to take the message to your various homes’’.

Soroti Community Secondary School emerged as overall winners, followed by the JERESSAR High School. Participants were presented with certificates and prizes including souvenirs of key Court documents and school related items.
