Prosecutor of the ICC Meets with Secretary General of the United Nations
The Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court, Mr Luis Moreno-Ocampo, met this week with the Secretary General of the United Nations, Mr Ban Ki-moon, to brief him about his ongoing investigations and prosecutions.
During the meeting the Secretary-General underscored that the establishment of the International Criminal Court constituted a unique opportunity to hold accountable those responsible for the most serious crimes of international concern, namely genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes, and to bring an end to impunity. He also stressed the deterring effect that the work of the Court already had on potential perpetrators of such crimes, thanked the Prosecutor for his work and affirmed that the United Nations would continue to assist and support the International Criminal Court in its endeavours.
Mr Moreno-Ocampo participated as speaker in the Seminar organised by UNITAR on Genocide Prevention. In addition to the Secretary General, he met with other high level UN officials in the field of Peacekeeping Operations, Legal Affairs, Political Affairs and Humanitarian Affairs. During all his meetings, he highlighted the importance of implementing the ICC Statute and in this context, strengthening cooperation among both institutions in order to achieve the objectives of the Rome Treaty and the United Nations Charter.
