President Song and Prosecutor Moreno-Ocampo meet President of Chile, Michelle Bachelet

The President of the International Criminal Court (ICC), Sang-Hyun Song and the Prosecutor, Luis Moreno-Ocampo, met today with the President of Chile, Michelle Bachelet. Ms Bachelet paid an official visit to the headquarters of the ICC as part of her scheduled visit to the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

ICC President Sang-Hyun Song in receiving President Bachelet and her delegation expressed his pleasure at her visit, particularly in light of the recent approval of legislation necessary for the process of ratification to the ICC Rome Statute by the Chilean Chamber of Deputies. “It is an honour to welcome President Bachelet to the International Criminal Court, especially as Chile moves closer to ratifying the Rome Statute and becoming the 109th State Party.”

Speaking before the delegation, the Prosecutor, Luis Moreno-Ocampo also emphasised his support for the visit. “I am delighted to welcome President Bachelet and the parliamentarian delegation to The Hague. This International Criminal Court, to implement the law, needs leadership and consensus. Chile brings both.”

During the visit, the Chilean delegation was informed of the Court’s latest judicial activities.

The International Criminal Court is an independent, permanent court that investigates and prosecutes persons accused of the most serious crimes of international concern: genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes. It was established by an international treaty, the Rome Statute, to which 108 States are Parties.
