The Kenyan Minister of Justice to visit the Court

The Kenyan Minister of Justice Mr Mutula Kilonzo will pay an official visit to the International Criminal Court (ICC) tomorrow, 3 July 2009. Mr Kilonzo and his delegation will be received by ICC President Sang-Hyun Song. He will also meet with Judge Joyce Aluoch, the Prosecutor, Luis Moreno-Ocampo and senior officials of the Registry.

Welcoming the Kenyan minister’s visit President Song will take the opportunity to show his appreciation of Kenya’s sustained commitment and co-operation to the work of the Court since ratifying the Rome Statute. He will also use the occasion to inform the minister on the latest judicial activities of the Court aided by Judge Aluoch and senior members of the Registry who will provide a presentation.

Later the Prosecutor Luis Moreno-Ocampo will hold private consultations with the Kenyan Minister of Justice on alleged crimes committed in the context of post-election violence.

Finally, Registry officials will brief the delegation on key areas in the Registry’s work such as outreach and victims participation, legal representation, as well as on administrative aspects of the functioning of the Court.

The International Criminal Court is an independent, permanent court that tries persons accused of the most serious crimes of concern to the international community as a whole, namely the crime of genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes. It was established by an international treaty, the Rome Statute. 109 States have become Parties to the Rome Statute since it was adopted on 17 July 1998. Kenya ratified the Rome Statute on 15 March 2005.
