ICC Prosecutor in Addis Ababa for Meeting with African Union High-Level Panel on Darfur

International Criminal Court (ICC) Prosecutor Luis Moreno-Ocampo has arrived in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, today. On 7 July, he will meet with the African Union High-Level Panel on Darfur (AUPD) following an invitation by the Panel for consultations on Darfur. The Panel is led by former President Thabo Mbeki of South Africa. 

The Panel members are: General Abdulsalami Abubakar, former Head of State of the Federal Republic of Nigeria; Mr Pierre Buyoya, former President of Burundi; Hon Judge Florence Mumba, Judge of the Supreme Court of Zambia; Mr Ahmed Maher El Sayed, former Foreign Minister of Egypt; Mr Alhaji Kabir A. Mohammed, former State House Counsel and Special Envoy of former President Olusegun Obasanjo of Nigeria; and Ms Rakiya A. Omaar, Director, African Rights.

On 5 June, in his Report to the United Nations Security Council, the Prosecutor had commented “The Office recognizes the importance of a comprehensive solution for Darfur, including reconciliation and compensation, as well as moving ahead the process of accountability for other individuals involved in the commission of crimes. The Office of the Prosecutor is committed to working with President Mbeki and the AU Panel toward these goals”.

The International Criminal Court is an independent, permanent court that investigates and prosecutes persons accused of the most serious crimes of international concern, namely genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes.
