Press Conference: Decision to hold first public hearing

The International Criminal Court (ICC) today announced the decision of the Pre-Trial Chamber I to hold a Public hearing on Monday 20 March, 2006, 4 p.m., during which Thomas Lubanga Dyilo will appear before the Chamber.
The announcement was made today, 18 March 2006, at a press conference by the Registrar of the Court Mr Bruno Cathala.
He confirmed that since yesterday, 17 March 2006 shortly before midnight, Mr Thomas Lubanga, who was arrested in Kinshasa and surrendered to the ICC, is held in the detention centre at the Haaglanden Prison, in Scheveningen, The Hague. Mr Lubanga had landed a little earlier at the Rotterdam airport. He emphasised that the good coordination between the Court and the Dutch authorities facilitated the transfer from the Airport to the detention centre.
Mr Cathala told reporters that Mr Lubanga was twice examined by doctors in Kinshasa, before departure and upon his arrival at the prison. Doctors confirmed that he is in good health. He was also informed of his rights, including the right to choose counsel from the list of counsels established by the Registrar.
Mr Cathala answered questions from journalists in The Hague and Kinshasa, after which the Chief Prosecutor, Mr. Luis Moreno-Ocampo and the Deputy Prosecutor for Prosecutions, Ms. Fatou Bensouda, also briefed the press.
