President, Prosecutor and Registrar of the ICC meet EU High Representative for the CFSP, Javier Solana

The President of the International Criminal Court Judge Philippe Kirsch, the Prosecutor Mr. Luis Moreno-Ocampo, and the Registrar Mr. Bruno Cathala met yesterday in Brussels with the European Union (EU) High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy, Mr. Javier Solana.

The representatives of the Court updated Mr. Solana on recent developments at the Court.  The parties discussed cooperation between the Court and the EU, including the implementation of the agreement between the two institutions on cooperation and mutual assistance, adopted on 10 April 2006.

President Kirsch expressed the Court’s appreciation for the support and cooperation of the EU, noting that "cooperation of States and, by extension, international organizations is essential in all stages of the Court’s activities." President Kirsch said, "The EU has long been a consistent supporter of the Court.  The continued strong support of the EU will facilitate the Court’s work and will help to move towards universal ratification of the Rome Statute."

In his meeting with Mr. Solana, Prosecutor Luis Moreno-Ocampo drew attention to the new legal system which was created in Rome in 1998.  "Lasting peace requires justice," the Prosecutor said.  He expressed his gratitude for the cooperation of the EU when he briefed Mr. Solana about his investigations, including Darfur, and emphasised the Court needed the European Union's continued commitment to the enforcement of the Court's decisions in all situations.
