ICC Holds Workshop in Northern Uganda with Acholi Traditional Leaders

On 22 and 23 March 2006, the International Criminal Court in partnership with the Acholi cultural institution Ker Kwaro Acholi, held an informative workshop in Gulu. The aim of the workshop was to provide information about the ICC and listen to concerns expressed by local community leaders.

The participants included 50 Acholi traditional leaders from the Gulu, Kitgum and Pader Districts, including the Paramount Chief of the Acholi Rwot David Onen Acana II. The cultural institution Ker Kwaro Acholi works to promote peace building and reconciliation in the community through Acholi traditional mechanisms. 

During the workshop ICC staff provided information on its investigation in Northern Uganda as well as information on how victims can participate in Court proceedings. The traditional leaders shared their concerns and provided information on how Acholi traditional mechansims are working to promote reconciliation.

The participants agreed on the need to disseminate information on the ICC to the local community. The traditional leaders agreed to use their local networks to raise public awareness about the ICC.
