ICC holds workshop for IDP camp leaders from Uganda’s Amuria district

Seventy leaders from the Internally Displaced People’s camps of Amuria district, Teso region, have invited the International Criminal Court to conduct mass outreach meetings in their areas. The recommendation was reached during a one-day informational workshop held today in Soroti town, Soroti district.

The workshop was attended by leaders from 10 camps: Abarilela, Acowa, Akome, Amuria Town Council, Asamuk, Kapelebyong, Morungatuny, Obalang, Orungo and Oditel. Some district and sub-county councillors also attended.

The workshop was meant to broaden understanding of the ICC amongst the communities most affected by the conflict in northern Uganda.

Court officials from the Registry made presentations on the Court’s mandate, judicial phases and how victims could participate in ICC proceedings. Participants shared their concerns about Court’s activities and presented a set of recommendations on outreach. They committed to sharing information about the ICC during public gatherings and other regular meetings held in the camps.

The Vice Chairman, Amuria district council, Ebiru Paul, called the workshop “an eye opener” and encouraged all participants to share facts about the Court at the grassroots.
