CSOs attend ICC workshops in the Ugandan Acholi sub-region

On 14 and 16 August 2007, ninety-six representatives from civil society organisations (CSOs) working in the Kitgum and Pader districts of the Acholi sub-region, attended informative workshops with officials from the International Criminal Court (ICC). The meetings were organised in full co-operation with a local youth group, Youth Out of Poverty and Aids (YOPA), as part of the Court’s strategy to expand its outreach programme to those communities most affected by the on-going troubles.
Currently, the Kitgum and Pader districts are home to over 698,128 people. The workshops provided an explanation and update of the role of the ICC with regards to the situation in northern Uganda, after which court officials responded to questions and concerns raised by participants.
Participants thanked court officials for taking time to provide first hand information and requested the outreach team to organise further meetings to explain in greater detail the rights of victims before the court. Following the meeting, the resident District Commissioner of the Kitgum district, Mr Nauman Ojwee, described the court as a reliable partner in bringing sustainable peace to northern Uganda and pledged further co-operation with the court and its activities.
